Over the past few months we’ve done quite a bit of research online and really like the idea of aquaponics.
For anyone who hasn’t heard of it before- aquaponics is a unique way of gardening. At a very high level, you utilize a large fish tank, typically stocked with tilapia fish. The fish poop and pee into the water. That water is circulated to special garden beds where the plant, their roots, and the specialized clay media absorb, purify, and convert the wastewater into clean water for the fish. The plants utilize the water as fertilizer and you end up with healthy garden vegetables as well as fish that you can harvest for food as well.
Here, Kaylee is helping to paint a few of the barrels that will be part of the filtration system. We’re painting the components a shade that we affectionately refer to as “Go away green”. It’s an idea that we borrowed from Disney World. They have a complete color system dedicated to hiding buildings and infrastructure in plain sight by using special colors that cause the items to blend in with the natural environment.
